Assessments: Students are bench-marked three times a year to measure their growth. In Lyons School District 103, we use AIMS Web R-CBM, to measure a child's reading fluency. The second assessment tool we use is NWEA map testing which a student takes on a computer. This assessment tests children in the content areas of math and reading. Both of these assessments, help us drive our instruction and help close gaps and achieve positive outcomes. Finally, in the spring students will take PARCC which is state assessment that also assesses in reading and math.

Reading: Our reading program is a reading workshop model that has whole group, small group and guided reading instruction. We use Making Meaning. It is expected that your child is to read daily to increase their fluency. and comprehension. Children have access to my classroom library and our school library.

Math: Our current math program is Origo, each unit is broken up into modules. Students have a student workbook and are taught lessons in class. It is expected that they should bring this workbook home if they do not understand a concept. Students are also expected to study their multiplication and division facts until they achieve mastery since these basic facts are important.

Science: This year we have a new series this year called Elevate which covers life, physical and earth science. It is aligned with the Next Generation Science Standards.

Social Studies: Most of our content will be primary resources that are aligned with the current social studies standards, Our State, Our Nation. Some topics that will be covered this year are: geography, Illinois History, economics, and government.

Writing: We have a writing workshop model that will integrate grammar and spelling.  The program we use is Being a Writer, which uses trade books and strong writing samples to help build great writers. Students will have their own writer composition notebooks.
